Open source is the backbone of most if not all software-based innovation and allows us all to benefit immensely. Despite this, open source developers are often expected to sacrifice their time and finances to satisfy the needs of the masses. Luckily there are some very generous individuals and businesses out there that donate funds to keep these, oftentimes fragile, eco-systems alive. However, unfortunately the amount of businesses that actually contribute is an incredibly small fraction of the total amount of businesses that use these projects.

Support can act as a convenient extra source of funding, or for commercial actors, help to cover parts of costs related to offering support (as suggested by a large semiconductor company we talked to). For many projects new revenue streams naturally makes it easier to let contributors spend more time on the project, either through extra funding for the organisation or direct compensations from letting the contributors also act as helpers. From our own research and chats with OS projects, funding is raised as one of the main factors that makes it challenging to allocate enough time to support. As a bonus, funding, or increased financial stability, also makes it easier to commit to long term roadmaps, and hence boost the value of the project among its users beyond the actual support.
